[teacher] When the Red Flowering Currants (Ribes sanguineum) begin to bloom each Spring, I know that the hummingbirds will be here soon. This 6-10 foot tall deciduous shrub is a native wildflower to most of the U.S. west coast. The plant produces many pendulous clusters of red or pink flowers which attract hummingbirds, butterflies and bees. The small bluish berries are eaten by a variety of wild birds.
Flowering Currants can be grown in full sun, but they prefer partial shade. They require a slightly acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5.
This plant can be propagated by seed or by simple layering (Pin a branch to the ground and it will root there!)
Flowering Red Currants are hardy in USDA Zones 5-8
