The Flowering Plum (Prunus blireiana) is a small deciduous tree which will only grow to a height of 15-20 feet, with a 15 foot spread. The fragrant, one inch, pink flowers appear in early spring followed by purple foliage which turns green by mid-summer. Flowering Plums seldom produce fruit due to a lack of pollinators when they bloom, but the dark purple plums are edible.
It blooms best in full sun but will tolerate partial shade. It grows best in moist, well draining soil. Flowering Plums are hardy in USDA zones 5-9.

Those blooms are gorgeous. With my incline and very clay soil would this tree stand a chance? And might it provide enough shade that I could have my peonies in a healthier light situation?
