Poor Man's Orchid

Schizanthus wisetonensis

The colorful orchid like flowers of the Poor Man's Orchid, Schizanthus wisetonensis contrast beautifully against the soft, feathery foliage of this annual plant. The Schizanthus, which is often called the Butterfly Flower, grow to a height of 1-2 feet, forming a neat rounded clump and produce masses of their pretty flowers from July to September. They may be started outdoors in containers and bought inside once they begin to bloom.
Cut Butterfly Flowers will last up to a week in the home.

Poor Man's Orchid

Schizanthus dislike extremes of heat or cold, preferring cool, moist conditions. They will flower best when grown in full sun, however, in warmer climates they should planted in light shade to prolong their growing season. After planting, water them regularly, keeping the soil moist throughout the summer and early fall. Feed your Schizanthus about every two weeks with a 20-20-20 water soluble fertilizer.

Schizanthus seeds tend to be very slow to germinate, so you may want to purchase bedding plants from your garden center, but the seeds can be started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost date.
